Runway overrun at Butuan Airport involving aircraft from Manila

No fatalities • Butuan, Philippines • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft traveling from Manila-Ninoy Aquino Airport overran the runway at Butuan Airport, resulting in serious injuries to the crew and damage to the airframe.

What happened

During a flight originating from Manila-Ninoy Aquino Airport, the crew initiated an approach to Butuan Airport under favorable meteorological conditions. Upon touchdown on runway 12/30, which has a total length of 1,965 metres, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the paved surface. This resulted in a runway excursion where the plane exited the runway, descended down an embankment, and ultimately stopped within a coconut grove.

The impact caused the cockpit area to be partially destroyed. Among the occupants, both pilots sustained serious injuries. Of the passengers on board, 32 passengers suffered minor injuries, while 120 other individuals remained unhurt. The aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to damage sustained during the excursion.

Findings

  • The aircraft was unable to come to a halt within the available runway distance following landing.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the remaining runway length, leading to an excursion and subsequent embankment descent.
