Runway overshoot during landing at Lagos

No fatalities • Lagos-Murtala Muhammed, Nigeria • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo flight operating from Accra to Lagos overshot the runway during a landing attempt in heavy rain, resulting in significant aircraft damage but no injuries.

What happened

On the day of the incident, Flight DV110 was performing a scheduled cargo flight from Abidjan to Lagos, with a stopover in Accra. The aircraft, carrying a total cargo weight of 50,014 lbs (22,733 kgs), departed Accra at 11:45 hrs. During the descent into Lagos, the flight crew communicated with Lagos Area Control while maintaining an altitude of 21,000 feet. As the aircraft approached the destination, air traffic controllers issued a series of descending altitude clearances, eventually bringing the aircraft down to 2,200 feet for the ILS approach to runway 18L.

At approximately 13:03 hrs, while 2 NM from the runway, the crew received clearance to land on runway 18L. Controllers specifically advised the crew to exercise caution because the runway surface was wet. Weather conditions were challenging, with a low cloud base reported at approximately 100 feet above minimums and active rainfall. Upon touchdown, the captain determined that the aircraft could not stop within the available runway distance and initiated a go-around maneuver. However, the transition was not executed correctly, causing the aircraft to overshoot the runway by approximately 400 meters into the adjacent grass area. The incident resulted in no injuries to the crew, though the aircraft sustained serious damage.

Findings

  • The runway surface was wet due to ongoing rain.
  • The go-around procedure was not properly executed following the touchdown attempt.

Probable cause

An improperly executed go-around maneuver following a landing attempt on a wet runway led to the aircraft overshooting the runway.
