What happened
During a departure from Medellín-José María Córdova Airport, an aircraft was performing its takeoff roll on runway 36 amidst rainy weather. During the acceleration phase, the crew observed an Engine Gas Temperature (EGT) warning light, indicating issues with both engine number 1 and engine number 4. Simultaneously, the first engine experienced further technical complications.
In response to these warnings, the captain initiated an aborted takeoff procedure. However, the decision to stop was made when the aircraft had already reached a speed 12 knots greater than the V1 decision speed. Due to the high velocity and the remaining runway length, the aircraft was unable to come to a complete stop before the end of the pavement. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway, resulting in the loss of the nose landing gear. The vessel eventually came to a halt approximately 150 metres past the runway end.
Findings
- The aircraft sustained damage beyond repair following the excursion.
- There were no fatalities among the five crew members, all of whom evacuated the aircraft safely.
- A primary contributing factor was the decision to abort the takeoff after exceeding V1 speed.
