What happened
On 30 August 2003, a Boeing 747, registration TF-ATN, was undergoing cargo loading at Manchester Airport, specifically at Stand 204. Following the completion of the loading process, the signal was given to close the aircraft's forward cargo door. As the door moved toward its closed position, the lower forward corner of the door struck a guide rail on the hi-loader platform used during the operation. This impact resulted in deformation of the door's corner, necessitating the grounding of the aircraft for necessary repairs.
The investigation
An investigation into the incident was conducted following a report from the Airfield Safety and Standards Officer at Manchester Airport. The inquiry focused on the interaction between the aircraft door and the ground support equipment. The investigation, carried out by the handling agent, determined that the hi-loader platform had not been moved to its fully down position before the door-closing sequence began. This deviation from established, published procedures was identified as the reason for the contact between the door and the guide rail. As part of the follow-up, the driver of the platform, who possessed over five years of experience, was suspended from driving duties pending further investigation.
