What happened
During an approach to Guatemala City-La Aurora Airport, the aircraft encountered adverse weather characterized by rainfall and a cloud ceiling of 2,000 feet with visibility limited to three miles. The flight crew was authorized to land on runway 19, facing a tailwind of 8 knots from 0ast 030°.
The aircraft touched down 1,070 meters beyond the runway threshold, maintaining a speed 17 knots higher than the reference landing speed. Following touchdown, the crew initiated braking and deployed the thrust reversers. Approximately 300 meters before the end of the runway, the captain steered the aircraft to the left, off the paved surface. At a velocity of 90 knots, the aircraft breached a perimeter fence and descended an embankment, ultimately coming to a stop within a residential area.
While the 236 occupants of the aircraft were able to evacuate without injury, the aircraft sustained total loss damage. The incident resulted in three minor injuries to individuals on the ground.
Findings
- The landing was performed with a tailwind component during poor visibility and rain.
- The aircraft's touchdown point was significantly past the runway threshold.
- The aircraft was traveling at a speed exceeding the calculated reference landing speed.
