What happened
A cargo transport flying from Indianapolis was performing its final approach to runway 10 at Chambers Field NAS in Norfolk when the accident occurred. During the descent, the aircraft struck the ground with its nose gear and left main landing gear making contact first. The force of the impact caused the left wing to detach from the fuselage, leading to a loss of control. Following the structural failure, the plane flipped onto its back and ignited into a fire.
Despite the intensity of the crash and the subsequent flames, all six crew members were able to exit the wreckage quickly. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the accident.
Findings
Investigations into the crash identified that the co-pilot, who was acting as the pilot in command during the approach, did not recognize that the aircraft's position was incorrect for a safe landing. The incident was driven by an incorrect approach configuration and a failure to maintain proper altitude levels. Additionally, it was determined that there was insufficient oversight provided by the captain during this phase of the flight.
