What happened
On the night of December 14, 1962, a Super Constellation, registration N6913C, operated by Flying Tiger Line Inc., crashed while performing an ILS approach to runway 7 at the Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California. The incident occurred at approximately 22:12 P.S.T. under heavy fog conditions.
Prior to the impact, the crew established radio contact to confirm their position on the localizer course, noting they were two miles from the runway threshold. Roughly twenty seconds after this final transmission, the aircraft struck a residential and industrial zone located approximately 1.25 miles west of the airport. The accident resulted in eight fatalities in total: all five occupants on the aircraft and three individuals on the ground.
Findings
The investigation determined that the primary factor in the accident was the incapacitation of the pilot-in-command. This medical emergency occurred during a critical stage of the approach, leading to a loss of control that the co-pilot could not rectify before the aircraft struck the ground.
