What happened
During an approach to La Macarena Airport, the flight crew encountered challenging meteorological conditions characterized by heavy rain and fog, which significantly reduced visibility. Because the crew could not visually identify the runway, they performed a go-around. A subsequent attempt to land was also aborted due to the ongoing weather constraints.
During a third approach, the aircraft struck a hill situated approximately 8 km from the airport. The impact caused the plane to come to rest in an inverted position. The accident resulted in 21 fatalities among the occupants. While one passenger initially survived the crash with serious injuries, they succumbed to their wounds several days later.
Findings
Investigation into the sequence of events indicates that the crew failed to maintain sufficient altitude during the final approach attempt, leading to the collision with terrain.
