Accident Overview
A Cessna 208A operating an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) freight flight from Aspen to Denver, Colorado, crashed while conducting an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to Runway 36. The aircraft entered a steep descent and impacted terrain approximately 3 miles from the approach end of the runway. Investigators found no evidence of preimpact failure of any aircraft components.
Weather Conditions
Forecast moderate to heavy icing conditions were present in the Denver area. At the time of the accident, the reported weather at the airport included 800 ft scattered clouds, 1,000 ft broken ceilings, visibility of 4 statute miles, freezing drizzle, and snow showers. The temperature was 28°F with a dew point of 25°F. The aircraft encountered icing conditions while on the approach.
Probable Cause
The official probable cause was determined to be the accumulation of structural ice and the subsequent stalling of the aircraft. Icing conditions were cited as a related factor.
