What happened
In the morning, a twin-engine aircraft departed from Regensburg-Oberhub Airport, bound for Mannheim City. Approximately 15 minutes before the scheduled arrival, the pilot opted to cancel the existing IFR flight plan, transitioning to VFR procedures for the descent.
While conducting the approach at an altitude of 1,700 feet and maintaining a speed of 110 knots, the aircraft made contact with treetops. The impact occurred in a hilly, forested area situated east of Dossenheim, roughly 15 km southeast of Mannheim Airport. The collision triggered a post-crash fire that consumed the aircraft. The pilot, who was the only person on board, sustained serious injuries during the accident and subsequently passed away two weeks later.
Findings
- The flight transitioned from IFR to VFR flight rules shortly before the accident.
- Impact with trees during the descent led to the destruction of the aircraft and the subsequent fire.
