What happened
During an instrument approach to runway 26 at Clermont-Ferrand-Auvergne Airport, a single-engine aircraft was performing an ILS Z approach under instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). While executing the approach, the pilot did not adhere to the established missed approach procedures. Consequently, air traffic control instructed the pilot to perform a right turn to climb to 6,000 feet toward the TIS VOR.
Following a series of turns during the climb and descent phases, the aircraft drifted away from the intended approach path. The aircraft subsequently entered a high nose-down attitude, leading to a loss of control. The aircraft struck the ground at high speed approximately 6 km before reaching the runway. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate. There were three fatalities among the occupants. At the time of the accident, the flight was conducting an intermediate stop at Clermont-Ferrand to collect two more passengers for a subsequent leg to Biarritz.
Findings
- The pilot failed to follow published missed approach procedures.
- The aircraft deviated from the approach path following instructions to climb and turn.
- The loss of control was characterized by a high nose-down attitude prior to ground impact.
