What happened
The incident occurred while the pilot was conducting a positioning flight from Oslo to Stavanger. The objective of the mission was to participate in the inauguration ceremony for Sola Airport. The aircraft involved was a de Havilland DH.60M Moth operated by the Norwegian Air Force (Kongelige Norske Luftforsvaret). During the journey, the pilot encountered reduced visibility caused by foggy conditions. In response to these weather challenges, the pilot attempted an emergency landing. However, control of the aircraft was lost during this maneuver, leading to a crash in the vicinity of Lake Eikeren.
Findings
The sole occupant of the aircraft, the pilot, sustained fatal injuries and was killed in the accident. The primary contributing factor cited in the sequence of events was the loss of control while attempting an emergency landing under low-visibility conditions.
