What happened
During the landing phase on runway 29 at Genoa-Cristoforo Colombo Airport, the aircraft encountered significant crosswinds, with gusts measured between 15 and 18 knots. The landing was characterized by a single-gear touchdown, followed by a bounce that resulted in a heavy impact further down the runway. Although the crew initiated braking maneuvers, the aircraft could not decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length. Consequently, the plane exited the runway and came to a stop in the sea. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a landing on only one gear.
- Crosswind gusts contributed to an unstable approach and landing.
- The aircraft failed to stop within the remaining runway distance after a bounced landing.
- The incident resulted in 4 fatalities and 18 injuries, with some passengers sustaining serious harm. Nine individuals on board were able to evacuate without injury.
