A supply aircraft crashed into a swamp near Lake Palik after parachute lines became entangled in the tail, resulting in the deaths of all five crew members.

What happened

During a supply mission from Smolensk intended for partisans operating in the Borisov district of the Minsk region, an incident occurred involving the aircraft's cargo. The suspension lines of a parachute became entangled with the empennage while the plane was in flight. Although the crew managed to recover the aircraft from the resulting dive, the situation remained critical as the parachute cargo itself became snagged on trees. This secondary obstruction led to a loss of control, causing the aircraft to crash into a swampy area.

Findings

The accident resulted in significant casualties among the flight deck personnel. The copilot was killed immediately upon impact. Four other crew members also died as a result of the crash. The captain sustained severe injuries during the incident and succumbed to them sixteen hours later. Consequently, all five individuals on board perished.

Probable cause

The crash was caused by parachute suspension lines becoming entangled in the empennage, followed by the cargo snagging on trees which led to a loss of control.
