A supply aircraft lost contact while attempting to navigate poor weather conditions and crashed into a forest, resulting in the deaths of all six crew members.

What happened

During a supply mission from Yankovtsy to Kutski, the flight crew encountered weather conditions that fell below operational minima. Specifically, they faced low cloud ceilings and reduced visibility, which prevented them from visually locating the destination airstrip at Kutski.

Instead of executing a standard return procedure, the captain continued the approach. The aircraft subsequently impacted trees approximately 1.5 km north of Avgustova, located 25 km southwest of Maladechna. The impact caused the plane to crash nose-down into a forested area. Search and rescue teams recovered the wreckage three days after the incident, on July 16.

Findings

The accident resulted in six fatalities, as all members of the crew perished in the crash. The primary operational issue identified was the decision to continue the approach despite being unable to see the runway due to adverse weather conditions.

Probable cause

The aircraft crashed after the captain failed to return when unable to locate the destination airstrip due to below-minima weather conditions.
