What happened
On an international flight originating from Vancouver, a four-engine aircraft was en route to Tokyo-Haneda with a scheduled stop at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage. During the cruise phase along the coastline of Alaska, the crew transmitted a position report indicating they were flying vertically relative to Cape Spencer, near Elfin Cove. The crew provided an estimated time of arrival at Yakutat for 0000LT.
Shortly after this final communication, the aircraft vanished from radar and radio contact. Following the failure of the flight to reach its intermediate destination in Anchorage, a large-scale search and rescue operation was initiated. Despite extensive efforts, no wreckage or debris was located, and no information regarding the 37 fatalities was recovered. The search operations were officially terminated on October 31, 1951.
Findings
Because the aircraft and its passengers were never found, investigators could not reach a definitive conclusion regarding the accident. However, it is noted that at the time of the disappearance, the flight was operating in severe weather conditions characterized by heavy rain, icing, and visibility restricted to only 500 feet.
