Runway excursion at Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport

No fatalities • Quito-Mariscal Sucre (City), Ecuador • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft overran the runway during a night approach in poor weather at Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport, resulting in no fatalities but significant damage to the plane.

What happened

During a night flight originating from Loja, the crew initiated a descent toward runway 35 at Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport under conditions of poor visibility and inclement weather. Upon landing on the wet surface of runway 35, the aircraft experienced significant issues with braking and deceleration. The momentum of the plane prevented it from stopping within the available runway length, leading to a runway excursion.

As the vehicle left the paved surface, it traveled down an embankment and struck a brick wall before coming to a final halt. The impact did not result in a post-crash fire. All 103 occupants on board were successfully rescued from the wreckage. Among the group, four passengers sustained minor injuries during the event.

Findings

  • The presence of a wet runway surface contributed to the loss of braking effectiveness.
  • The aircraft, identified as the 'Ciudad de Cuenca', sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.

Probable cause

Inadequate deceleration on a wet runway during night operations led to the aircraft overrunning the runway.
