What happened
A flight traveling from Dhaka to Sylhet experienced several hours of delay prior to departure because of severe weather at the destination airport. The conditions included heavy rainfall, strong winds, a low cloud ceiling, and significantly reduced visibility.
During the approach and landing phase, the aircraft type encountered a wet runway surface. The pilot was unable to decelerate the plane sufficiently before the end of the pavement, causing the aircraft to overshoot the runway. The sequence ended when the plane exited the runway and settled in a drainage ditch.
Regarding the occupants, there were 30 injuries reported among the passengers, though these were described as minor. While most people on board escaped without harm, the two pilots sustained serious injuries because the cockpit area of the aircraft became pinned against an earthen embankment.
Findings
- The primary factor in the accident was the inability to stop on a wet runway given the remaining distance.
- Adverse meteorological conditions, including heavy rain and low visibility, contributed to the operational difficulties during the landing.
