What happened
A flight arriving from Krasnoyarsk concluded its journey with a landing at Yakutsk Airport. The operation proceeded without incident until the four-engine aircraft had traveled approximately 250 meters along the main runway following touchdown. During this period, an ambulance entered the active runway and collided with the moving plane.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the ambulance. All three occupants within the vehicle sustained serious injuries. The aircraft remained in motion for several additional yards before finally coming to a stop. While there were no injuries reported among the passengers or crew of the airplane, the aircraft sustained damage so extensive that it was declared a total loss.
Findings
Investigations into the collision revealed that the accident was caused by the ambulance driver crossing the runway without authorization from the air traffic control tower.
