What happened
On 30 August 2018, an Atlas Air Boeing 747-47UF, registration N415MC, was completing a cargo flight from Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai to Hong Kong International Airport. Upon touchdown on Runway 25R, the aircraft's path deviated from the runway centerline. The aircraft initially veered to the right and then swung abruptly to the left. During this sequence, the aircraft experienced a significant right roll. This banking motion caused the underside of the No.3 and No.4 engine nacelles to strike the runway surface. Following the contact, the aircraft realigned with the centerline and taxied to a cargo parking stand. There were no injuries to the five persons on board.
The investigation
The investigation examined the flight path, aircraft systems, and crew performance. Investigators analyzed flight data, cockpit voice recordings, and CCTV footage to reconstruct the aircraft's movements. The team also reviewed maintenance records, weather conditions at the time of landing, and the training protocols of the operator. The investigation involved collaboration with the NTSB, the Boeing Company, and the aircraft operator.
Findings
- The damage to the inlet cowls, fan cowls, and reverser translating cowls of the No.3 and No.4 engines was caused by the exaggerated flight control inputs made by the pilot flying.
- The physical contact with the runway was the result of a sharp right yaw combined with a significant right roll.
- The aircraft was undergoing a line check at the time of the incident.
