Runway overrun at Surakarta-Adisumarmo Airport

25 fatalities • Surakarta-Adisumarmo, Indonesia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft crashed after overrunning the runway during a landing in heavy rain at Surakarta-Adisumarmo Airport, resulting in multiple fatalities.

What happened

During the descent toward Surakarta-Adisumarmo Airport, the flight crew received reports of severe weather at the destination, including heavy rainfall and cumulonimbus clouds, with a cloud ceiling of 1,500 feet. Despite these conditions, the approach was carried out. Upon landing on runway 26, the crew initiated braking and deployed the thrust reversers. However, due to the wet surface of the runway, the aircraft type could not stop before the end of the pavement.

The resulting overrun caused the aircraft to lose its undercarriage and slide for several dozen meters. During the excursion, the plane struck localizer antenna equipment and a fence before finally coming to a halt in a nearby cemetery. The accident resulted in 25 fatalities, including both pilots and 23 passengers, while 70 injuries were reported among the other occupants. Additionally, 68 individuals on board escaped the wreckage without harm. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the impact.

Findings

  • The presence of heavy rain and cumulonimbus clouds created a wet runway surface.
  • The aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently on the slippery runway surface.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to stop within the runway limits due to insufficient braking effectiveness on a wet runway during heavy rain.
