What happened
On a scheduled ferry flight departing Strelka-Chunya at 11:26 local time, an unspecified single-engine airplane was en route to Vanavara when it encountered a fatal accident. At the time of the flight, meteorological conditions were characterized by light snowfall and visibility ranging between 6 and 10 kilometers, with an outside air temperature of -25°C.
During the transit, the aircraft struck trees and came to rest in a forested region. Following the failure of the flight to reach its intended destination, search and rescue operations were launched. The wreckage was located approximately 78 km north of Vanavara roughly two hours after the disappearance. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe and two fatalities among the crew.
Findings
Official investigations into the crash could not establish a definitive cause with absolute certainty. Technical inspections revealed that the engine was producing standard power levels at the moment of impact, and no mechanical malfunctions or component failures were identified within the aircraft. Furthermore, there was no evidence of pilot error or operational mistakes by the crew.
Investigators noted that the crew did not transmit any distress signals prior to the crash. Based on the presence of blood traces found on the floor and the windshield of the cockpit, the board concluded that the accident was likely the result of an in-flight collision with a foreign object.
