What happened
A scheduled commercial flight departing from Batagay for Lazo crashed while navigating through difficult atmospheric conditions. The aircraft, carrying two crew members and 10 passengers, was operating in an area characterized by low visibility and active icing. During the cruise phase of the flight, at an altitude of approximately 860 meters, the plane collided with a mountain slope in the Lazo region.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were 12 fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors reported from the crash site.
Findings
Investigations into the accident revealed that the meteorological conditions encountered by the flight were more severe than what had been previously predicted in weather forecasts. The crew proceeded with the flight despite visibility levels falling below established minimum requirements, which prevented them from maintaining visual contact with the terrain. Additionally, it was noted that the co-pilot had a blood alcohol concentration of 1‰, a factor that likely impaired decision-making and operational capabilities during the flight.
