What happened
On a flight originating from Ottawa/Carp Airport in Ontario, a SOCATA TBM 700N, registered as C-FBKK, began an instrument flight rules departure intended for Goderich, Ontario. During the initial stages of the flight, the pilot decided to change the destination to Wiarton, Ontario. After receiving clearance from air traffic control to ascend to flight level 260, the aircraft continued its climb past the assigned altitude.
As the aircraft passed FL260, it entered a right-hand turn that transitioned into a spiral dive. The aircraft impacted the ground at roughly 1219 Eastern Daylight Time. The impact caused the destruction of the airframe and ignited small fires that burned portions of the wreckage. The pilot was the only person on board and sustained fatal injuries.
Findings
Following the impact, the aircraft's 406 MHz emergency locator transmitter was damaged. Due to this damage, the signal from the device was not detected by the search and rescue satellite-aided tracking (SARSAT) system.
