What happened
During the landing phase of the flight, the crew approached the runway at a speed exceeding recommended limits. Due to heavy rain and the resulting wet conditions of the runway, the aircraft touched down significantly further down the strip than intended.
In an attempt to decelerate, the crew initiated maximum braking and deployed the drag chute. However, these actions led to a total wheel lockup, causing all tires on the aircraft to burst. Consequently, the plane was unable to stop within the available runway length and overran the pavement. During the excursion, the aircraft sustained heavy damage, including the loss of the left main landing gear and structural damage to the left wing.
All 93 occupants were successfully evacuated from the Boeang 747. While there were no fatalities, 12 injuries were reported during the incident.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to the accident was the incorrect approach configuration maintained by the flight crew. The combination of high approach velocity and the loss of braking effectiveness on the wet surface prevented the aircraft from stopping safely.
