Aeromexico will roll out Apijet's Digital Winglets 4D flight-optimisation software across its fleet, under a multi-year agreement covering close to 170 Boeing and Embraer aircraft. The Mexican carrier had already trialled the system on its route network before committing to the wider deployment.

The software analyses conditions during flight and proposes adjustments to route, altitude, speed and flight time. According to the airline, it accounts for weather, airspace restrictions and other air traffic. The stated aims are lower fuel consumption and fewer delays.

The technology draws in part on the Traffic-Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests, or TASAR, method developed by Nasa. Apijet says no additional hardware or software installation on board is required.

More than 400 aircraft in North America now use the technology, according to Apijet, whose other customers include Allegiant Air in the United States and Porter Airlines in Canada.
