Air Baltic cancels planned Groningen–Tenerife route before launch

Air Baltic has scrapped a planned route between Groningen in the Netherlands and Tenerife before it ever flew, according to a report from the aviation news portal Up In The Sky. The flight had been due to run once a week starting in October.

The Latvian carrier said the cancellation ties into a broader restructuring effort now under way. As part of that process, Air Baltic is cutting its fleet from 54 aircraft to 36.

The airline is also closing its base on Tenerife, which would have anchored one end of the cancelled route. The report did not name any other routes affected by the restructuring.

Air Baltic gave no comment on the specific commercial reasoning behind targeting the Groningen–Tenerife pairing. The cancellation appears to be one of several adjustments the airline is making as it scales back operations amid its financial and organizational overhaul.

The timeline for completing the fleet reduction was not disclosed, nor was it made clear whether other newly announced routes face similar cancellation.
