Brazil clears American Airlines' minority stake in Azul
Brazilian competition regulators have approved a $100 million minority investment by American Airlines in the low-cost carrier Azul, giving the US carrier roughly an 8% holding and a board seat.

Brazil's antitrust regulator CADE has approved a $100 million minority investment by American Airlines in Azul, the Brazilian low-cost carrier. The stake gives American about 8% of Azul and a seat on its board of directors. United Airlines holds a comparable share after receiving approval for its own investment in January 2026.
Approval comes with conditions. The two carriers must sign a concentration control agreement barring the exchange of sensitive commercial material, among other limits. Camila Cabral Pires Alves, a CADE commissioner, said the arrangement tackles the competition risks identified without going beyond what is needed. The investment was announced in February 2026.
For Azul, the money is a source of liquidity during a year of change following its exit from Chapter 11 restructuring. The carrier has also secured R$2.66 billion, about $511 million, in long-term financing from the Brazilian Development Bank, BNDES, in September. Half was drawn immediately, with the remainder expected to be used in the fourth quarter. Executives said in August that Azul had sharply reduced capacity to protect liquidity and keep its focus on long-term value as fuel prices rose.
