Delta Air Lines retired its 18 Boeing 777-200ER and 777-200LR jets during the pandemic, a move that left United Airlines and American Airlines as the US carriers still flying the 777. With those aircraft gone, the Atlanta-based airline placed the Airbus A350-900 at the centre of its long-haul international network.
Delta is now the only US airline operating the A350. The twin-aisle jet anchors its most lucrative transoceanic routes and its premium cabin offerings.
The decision set Delta apart from its legacy domestic competitors, which kept their 777 fleets.
