Kägiswil airfield operations suspended until November 2026

Flight operations at Kägiswil airfield will be interrupted until 20 November 2026 at the earliest. The existing building-rights agreement between Armasuisse and the Flugplatzgenossenschaft Obwalden expires on 30 September and has not been extended, so the Federal Office of Civil Aviation has ordered the airfield closed. For now, only flights to relocate aircraft are permitted.

From 9 October through 20 November, operations must stop entirely on safety grounds. The reason is work by the Swiss Air-Rescue service Rega, which is putting up section bars near the runway for a planned new building.

The Rega intends to base part of its helicopter fleet's technical maintenance and its headquarters at Kägiswil in future. Documents for the planned civil heliport will be open to public inspection from 15 October to 16 November 2026.

The federal government and the airfield cooperative are currently negotiating whether the airfield could keep operating after 20 November.
