A new IATA report says modern fuel-efficient engines are not delivering the reliability manufacturers promised. Higher maintenance costs are offsetting part of the savings airlines expected, pushing the cost of ownership above what carriers had budgeted for.
Engine durability issues, shortages of spare parts and limited availability of spare engines are disrupting day-to-day operations, according to the report. Constrained access to the aftermarket adds to the strain.
A large share of engine manufacturing capacity was lost during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been difficult to bring back. That shortfall sits behind much of the current pressure on airlines.
