UK to gain access to Ukrainian battlefield data for AI drone development

The UK is to get access to a Ukrainian database of battlefield sensor data collected by uncrewed aerial systems, under an agreement between the two countries. Up to 12 UK companies are expected to take part.

Ukraine's Avengers AI labs holds the dataset, which contains more than 6 million sensor detections, including air defence systems and UAVs, and daylight and thermal imagery gathered by drones operating in Ukraine. According to London, the material will be used to build AI models in the UK capable of controlling drone swarms.

The aim is technology that lets drone swarms keep operating when communications are degraded or satellite navigation is unavailable. The Ministry of Defence's Rapid AI Delivery (RAID) Taskforce is leading the work. It will run an inaugural competition under the UK-Ukraine AI partnership and select participating companies in the coming weeks.

Industry proposals must cover four focus areas: autonomous target recognition, distributed decision-making, adaptive mission execution, and collaborative sensing and information fusion. They must meet both British and Ukrainian defence requirements.

Kanishka Narayan, the government's AI minister, said the arrangement was the kind of practical partnership the task force was set up to drive, supporting Ukraine while strengthening domestic capability.

Access to the Ukrainian data is described as an advantage standard testing cannot replicate, drawing on more than four years of combat. The initiative is part of a wider British effort on drone capabilities backed by a £5 billion investment package announced in June 2026.
