United Airlines expands transatlantic network for summer 2027

United Airlines plans to add nine new European destinations for the 2027 summer season, the carrier said. Eight of the new markets reportedly will have no other US carrier flying them directly.

Much of the growth hinges on United's new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The airline said the type will enter service in September 2026 on domestic flights for crew familiarization, then move to transatlantic routes in December, starting with Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin during the low season.

In early April 2027, the A321XLR is set to begin daily flights from Newark to Luxembourg, the first of five new markets planned for the aircraft. A Dulles to Toulouse route follows in late April. Newark flights to Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille are scheduled to start around the end of May or early June, timed to peak summer demand.

Three other destinations, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania, will instead get less-than-daily service from Newark using Boeing 767 aircraft. United reportedly considers those routes too long to fly comfortably near the A321XLR's range limits. A route to Terceira in the Azores, the shortest of the new additions, will use the Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Dulles will also gain a three-times-weekly flight to Milan, and Denver will add a new daily transatlantic route, according to the carrier's announcement. United described the plans as part of its continued focus on Europe as a growth market for American travelers in the summer season.
