Accident Details
A helicopter pilot was conducting his first solo autorotation to a full landing when the maneuver ended with a tail strike, causing significant damage to the aircraft. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions or anomalies prior to the incident.
Pilot Account
According to the pilot, the autorotation was initiated at approximately 1,000 feet. During the descent, he noticed a higher than normal rate of descent near the ground. Despite his efforts, the flare was executed late, and the helicopter “settled fast” onto the landing area.
Damage Assessment
Upon touchdown, the tail of the helicopter struck the ground, resulting in substantial damage to the tail boom, tail rotor drive shaft, and tail rotor assembly. The extent of the damage required repair before the helicopter could be flown again.
