What happened
On August 22, 2020, at approximately 16:00 local time, an individual attempted a flight in a powered hang glider (type undetermined) near Maszkowice, Poland. The pilot, who had purchased the aircraft only one day prior, attempted to take off without possessing the required flight qualifications. During the ascent, the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 10 meters before tilting to the side and striking the ground. The pilot sustained a spinal injury as a result of the impact.
The investigation
The PKBWL reviewed available materials regarding the incident and established that the pilot was operating the aircraft without legal authorization. Following the crash, police arrived at the scene and conducted two separate breathalyzer tests on the pilot. Both tests revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.19 mg/l. Due to the fact that the aircraft was being operated by an unlicensed individual and the pilot was under the influence of alcohol, the PKBWL decided to refrain from a full technical investigation.
Findings
- The pilot lacked the necessary licenses and qualifications to operate the powered hang glider.
- The pilot was operating the aircraft while under the influence of alcohol.
- The aircraft's lack of registration prevented specific identification of the airframe.
