What happened
On the afternoon of 16 September 2021, a privately registered Mooney M20J was attempting to land on Runway 30 at the Sundridge South River Airport in Ontario. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and one passenger at the time of the incident. During the landing sequence, the aircraft experienced several bounces on the runway, prompting the pilot to initiate a go-around.
Following the aborted landing, the aircraft lost control and struck trees in a nearby forest. The impact occurred roughly 1,300 feet beyond the departure end of the runway. The collision resulted in two fatalities, and the aircraft was completely destroyed.
The investigation
The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the accident, focusing on the sequence of events leading from the initial landing attempt to the subsequent collision with the terrain.
