What happened
On 22 April 2022, a Mooney M20K, registered as C-GQMS, was conducting a round-robin flight under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). The flight originated from Springbank Airport (CYBW) in Alberta with two pilots on board. While performing an approach to runway 35, the aircraft descended into the terrain, striking the ground approximately 0.6 NM before reaching the runway threshold. The impact resulted in one fatality for the pilot in the left seat and serious injuries for the pilot in the right seat. There was no fire reported following the collision.
The investigation
The TSB conducted a Class 4 investigation into the accident. The investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding the aircraft's descent and the impact with the ground during the final approach phase of the flight.
