Synopsis
On 24 July 2018, a Boeing 777-200 aircraft, registration HS-TJD, operated by Thai Airways International Public Company Ltd, was involved in a serious incident during landing at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport (VGHS) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The flight, TG321, originated from Bangkok (BKK). On board were 2 flight crew, 13 cabin crew, 1 ground engineer, 14 business class passengers, and 141 economy class passengers. The aircraft sustained damage including six blown tyres and a right main landing gear that left the runway surface.
History of Flight
The aircraft was flown by the co-pilot on the first approach to Runway 14. During final approach in moderate to heavy rain with a crosswind component of about 10–11 knots from the right, visual contact with the runway was not established, and a missed approach was initiated from the missed approach point. The aircraft was then vectored by radar for a second ILS approach to Runway 14, this time flown by the Pilot in Command (PIC). The weather remained similar. The approach was flown with autopilot engaged until 135 feet above ground level, at which point the autopilot was disengaged as previously discussed between the pilots.
From 135 feet down to the runway, the aircraft deviated slightly to the right, into the wind, and slightly below the normal glide path. Touchdown occurred on the right half of the runway centerline, 576 feet beyond the threshold, at an angle of about 5 degrees right of the runway heading. Immediately after touchdown, the PIC applied left rudder to correct. The aircraft rolled for 768 feet before the right main landing gear exited the runway onto wet grassy mud. The aircraft continued rolling for another 1,536 feet with the nose and left main gears on the runway concrete surface while the right main gear remained on the wet grassy mud. During this phase, the right main gear wheel hub contacted the runway edge lighting system, causing further damage.
Damage to Aircraft
The aircraft sustained six blown tyres. The right main landing gear was damaged due to contact with the runway edge lighting and traversing the muddy terrain. The extent of structural damage is not detailed in the preliminary account.
Injuries to Persons
The source report does not mention any injuries to passengers or crew.
Investigation
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Group of Bangladesh (AAIG-BD) conducted the investigation in accordance with ICAO Annex 13. Accredited representatives from Thailand, the USA, the EU, and Singapore participated. The Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder were decoded with assistance from the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau of Singapore.
Probable Cause
The investigation report does not explicitly state a probable cause in the provided excerpt.
