What happened
On a mission operating for the United Nations Organization, a twin-engine aircraft departed from Split to deliver blankets to displaced populations in Sarajevo. During the approach to Sarajevo-Butmir Airport, while maintaining an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet, the aircraft was struck by a Stinger missile. Following the impact, the plane entered a steep dive and crashed into a forested region on Mt Zec, situated roughly 35 km west of Sarajevo.
Findings
- The aircraft was totally destroyed upon impact with the terrain.
- There were four fatalities among the crew members of the 46th Brigade.
- The primary cause of the crash was the impact from a Stinger missile during the descent phase.
