Incident
A twin-engine aircraft operating a special flight for the United Nations Organization was shot down while approaching Sarajevo-Butmir Airport. The aircraft had departed Split carrying a load of blankets intended for homeless people in Sarajevo. At an altitude of 15,000 feet, it was struck by a Stinger missile, entered a dive, and crashed in a wooded area on Mount Zec, approximately 35 kilometers west of Sarajevo. The aircraft was totally destroyed.
Crew
All four crew members, belonging to the 46th Brigade, were killed in the crash. They were identified as Lieutenant Colonel Marco Setti, Major Marco Rigliaco, and Marshals Giuseppe Buttaglieri and Giuliano Velardi.
Investigation
The official investigation concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the aircraft being shot down by a Stinger missile.
