What happened
During the approach to Bagram Air Force Base, the flight crew encountered issues with the landing gear deployment. After lowering the undercarriage, the cockpit indicators failed to show three green lights, specifically with the left main gear signal remaining red. To address the uncertainty, the captain received permission from Air Traffic Control to perform two low passes over the airfield. Following these maneuvers, controllers confirmed that all three landing gear components were properly extended.
Despite the confirmation, the aircraft's final approach was conducted at a low airspeed. Upon touchdown and during the subsequent braking phase, the left main gear collapsed. This structural failure caused the aircraft to veer toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft eventually came to a stop approximately 2 km beyond the runway threshold. There were no injuries reported among the five crew members on board, though the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The landing gear deployment sequence was incomplete, as indicated by a persistent red light for the left main gear.
- The collapse of the landing gear occurred during the braking phase of the landing roll.
