Aircraft crash in Krasnoye Polye following engine failure

4 fatalities • Almaty, Kazakhstan • Takeoff (climb)

An airplane crashed into a residential area near Alma-Ata Airport during its initial climb, resulting in four fatalities and 27 injuries.

What happened

During the early stages of flight from Alma-Ata Airport, an aircraft experienced a critical malfunction while ascending. At an altitude of approximately 80 meters, the plane began a right-hand bank and subsequently lost altitude. The descent ended in a crash into a residential area within the village of Krasnoye Polye, situated close to the airfield. The impact resulted in a fire that destroyed the aircraft and several nearby homes.

Out of all those on board, four fatalities were recorded, consisting of one crew member and three passengers. Additionally, 27 injuries occurred among the occupants. While property damage was sustained on the ground, no residents in the village were killed or injured during the incident.

Findings

Investigations into the accident revealed that the right engine suffered a loss of power during the climb phase. This failure occurred specifically at the moment the landing gear was being retracted. The resulting reduction in airspeed led to an aerodynamic stall, causing the aircraft to lose lift and descend into the village.

Probable cause

The loss of power in the right engine during gear retraction caused the aircraft to stall.
