What happened
While performing a takeoff roll at Ambon-Pattimura Airport, the aircraft experienced a failure in one of its engines just prior to reaching rotation speed (Vr). In response to the loss of power, the captain decided to abort the takeoff and applied emergency braking to stop the aircraft.
Due to the wet condition of the runway surface, the available distance was insufficient to bring the plane to a halt before the end of the pavement. Consequently, the aircraft overran the runway and traveled approximately 180 metres beyond the threshold, eventually coming to a stop against a dyke.
There were no fatalities among the 48 occupants on board, and all individuals evacuated the aircraft without injury. However, the aircraft sustained damage that was determined to be beyond repair.
Findings
- The primary factor in the inability to stop was the wet runway surface, which reduced braking effectiveness.
- An engine failure occurred during the critical takeoff phase, necessitating the aborted takeoff.
