What happened
During an approach to Kaimana Airport, a twin engine aircraft impacted the side of Mt Kumawa. The mountain, which reaches an elevation of 2,800 metres, is situated a short distance from the airport. Following the impact, search efforts located the debris field five days after the incident occurred.
There were 10 fatalities recorded in the accident, as all individuals on board perished during the crash. The aircraft was in its descent phase when it struck the terrain.
Findings
Official investigations concluded that the accident was the result of controlled flight into terrain.
