What happened
During the final approach to Surabaya-Juanda Airport, the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure involving the right engine. As the engine ceased functioning, the plane began a right-hand bank. The descent continued until the aircraft impacted a swampy region situated approximately 800 meters before the runway threshold.
This accident resulted in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. Records indicate that 16 fatalities occurred during the impact, while 28 others sustained various injuries. The flight was in the landing phase of its operation when the loss of power occurred.
Findings
- The primary event was the failure of the right engine during the short final stage of flight.
- The loss of thrust caused the aircraft to bank toward the side of the failed engine, leading to the crash in the nearby marshland.
