What happened
On the morning of September 11, 2001, a Boeing 767 departed from Boston-Logan Airport at 0814LT, operating a scheduled flight bound for Los Angeles. The aircraft was carrying 56 passengers and a crew of nine. Shortly after takeoff, the flight was taken over by terrorists who altered the intended flight path, directing the plane toward New York City.
At 0903LT, the aircraft collided with the South Tower of the World Trade Center, striking the structure between the 78th and 84th floors. The force of the impact caused the aircraft to disintegrate. The collision led to the subsequent collapse of the tower.
Findings
All 65 occupants of the aircraft perished in the crash. The incident was part of a coordinated terrorist attack. Due to the ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the NTSB provided technical support but did not maintain a public docket or release a formal safety report.
