What happened
During the takeoff phase from Kuito Airport, a twin engine airplane was targeted by a surface-to-air missile. The aircraft was in its climbing phase when it was struck, resulting in a crash approximately 30 km away from the airfield.
There were no survivors of the accident. The incident resulted in 25 fatalities, with all occupants on board the aircraft losing their lives.
Findings
Investigations into the destruction of the aircraft concluded that the primary cause was the impact of a surface-to-air missile. Specifically, the aircraft was shot down by UNITA rebels using ground-based missile technology.
