What happened
During the final approach to Richmond, the pilot did not recognize that the aircraft was flying at an altitude lower than required for safe landing. As a result of this low trajectory, the landing gear made contact with a fence near the runway. The impact caused the aircraft to overturn and come to rest upside down. Following the crash, the airframe burst into flames.
The accident resulted in significant casualties. One person was killed and one other individual sustained injuries. The deceased was identified as the pilot officer, while the injured party was a passenger serving as an able seaman.
