What happened
On a scheduled flight from São Paulo-Guarulhos Airport to Campo Grande, an Airbus A320 (flight JJ3804) was transporting 24 passengers and five crew members. While maintaining a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet, the flight crew identified malfunctions within the aircraft's fuel system. In response to these technical issues, an emergency was declared, and the flight was authorized to divert to Araçacia Airport.
During the approach to the diversion airport, the aircraft experienced a total loss of power as both engines failed at an altitude of 1,639 feet. Recognizing that the aircraft lacked the performance to reach the runway at Araçatuba, the pilot attempted to reach a nearby prairie located approximately 29.5 km from the airport.
Upon contact with the ground, the aircraft's landing gear separated from the airframe. The plane slid across the terrain, striking livestock before coming to a final stop. While all 29 occupants successfully evacuated the aircraft, four individuals sustained minor injuries. The aircraft was determined to be a total loss due to the extent of the structural damage.
Findings
- The primary driver of the incident was a dual engine failure resulting from technical complications in the fuel system.
