Aircraft overrun and fire at Seoul-Gimpo Airport

No fatalities • Seoul-Gimpo, South Korea • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft experienced an engine failure during its takeoff roll at Seoul-Gimpo Airport, resulting in a runway excursion, structural failure, and subsequent fire.

What happened

While performing the takeoff roll at Seoul-Gimpo Airport, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of power in its left engine accompanied by intense vibrations. In response to the mechanical failure, the pilot attempted to abort the takeoff by applying emergency braking. However, the aircraft was unable to halt before the end of the runway, leading to an overrun. During the excursion, the plane lost its landing gear and underwent a cartwheel motion before catching fire.

All 48 occupants were successfully evacuated from the wreckage, though the incident resulted in 21 injuries. The aircraft was completely destroyed during the event.

Findings

Investigations into the accident revealed that ice had broken away from the upper section of the left wing and entered the engine. This ingestion caused a stall in the high-pressure compressor, which triggered the vibrations and subsequent loss of directional control. Investigators also identified two contributing factors: inadequate deicing procedures prior to departure and insufficient flight preparation by the crew.

Probable cause

Ice shedding from the wing entered the left engine, causing a compressor stall and loss of power.
