What happened
During the final segment of its approach to Arkhangelsk-Talagi Airport, a four-engine airplane encountered a dense layer of fog. As the aircraft transitioned through this bank of fog, the pilot-in-command experienced a temporary loss of visual reference with the ground.
An attempt to execute a go-around was initiated, but the decision was made too late to prevent a high-impact touchdown on the runway. Following the hard landing, the aircraft lost directional control and veered off the prepared surface. The plane subsequently struck various obstacles before coming to a complete stop.
Findings
- All occupants on board managed to evacuate the wreckage without any injuries.
- The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it beyond repair.
- The primary factor in the excursion was the delayed decision to execute a go-around following the loss of visual contact with the terrain.
